The drain fly, also known as the moth fly are found throughout the world. There are 2,600 species of this fly worldwide. They are small and hairy with hairy wings that resemble a furry moth. Female flies normally lay 30- 100 eggs within damp drains, within 48 hours these eggs hatch and become drain worms (larvae form). The larvae feeds on the bacteria inside the drain. The developmental time from egg to adult is 7 – 28 days depending on the environment. Adults normally only live for 2 weeks.

Habitat

The drain flies are normally found in bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry sinks. They are usually within a close distance to a drain. The larvae can be found within crevices, or cracks by the drain in a damp area.

Threats

Drain flies / Moth flies do not transmit human diseases.

Habits

The drain fly is more of a nuisance pest. They are a weak flier so they are normally seen crawling on walls, floors, inside sinks, or bathtubs. They are most active at night but can be seen during daylight resting on walls close to the drains.

Fly Prevention

To prevent continuous breeding, cleaning slimy drains and plugging the drain when not in use. Keeping dirty dishes out of the sink and cleaning the garbage disposal is another helpful tip to detour an infestation.
