American Cockroach
Biology
The American cockroach is the largest species of the common cockroaches. These cockroaches are found worldwide. They are reddish brown in color, and both male and female adult cockroaches have wings.
These cockroaches have 3 developmental changes; egg, nymph, and adult. Female cockroaches produce an egg case that is attached to her abdomen. Normally, she can produce around 9 -10 of these egg cases, each of these cases contain between 14-16 eggs. Egg cases are released up to 4 days after creation, the female will use a mouth secretion to secure the egg case into cracks and crevices close to a food source. The lifespan of the American cockroach depends on the environment and temperature. On average, they live 600 days in a controlled temperature structure.
Feeding Preferences
The insects are scavengers and opportunistic feeders, they will feed on any type of foods. They prefer starches, sweets, grease, and meat products. In many areas, garbage is a principal food source.
Transmitted Diseases
The American cockroach has an odorous secretion. This can get on food and cause a case of food poisoning. Cockroaches do spread bacteria, protozoans, and viruses. Different forms of gastroenteritis appear to be the primary illness caused by cockroaches. Cockroach droppings and cast skins also contain a number of allergens which some people are allergic to; some physical reaction include skin rashes, watery eyes, sneezing, congestion, and asthma.
Habits
Cockroaches can usually be seen in kitchens (near dishwashers, stoves, and sinks) and in bathrooms of structures. These pests normally prefer moist environments with warmer temperatures. Cockroaches are mostly active at night, when they are searching for food, water, and mates. During the day they hide in cracks and crevices and other dark areas that provide a preferred environment. Their wide, flat bodies allow them to move in and out of cracks and narrow openings with ease. They may be seen during the day, especially if there is a large population, or if there is some other issue, such as a lack of food, water or an extermination chemical is applied. This species of cockroach is one of the fastest moving insects known. This is how Structural Pest will help you. We will provide fast and effective service to rid you of the infestation quickly and discreetly.
Cockroach Extermination
To control American cockroaches, Structural Pest will do a thorough inspection. A cockroach trapping is sometimes necessary to determine the level of an infestation. A key factor in prevention is sanitation. Cleaning up all spilled foods and removing dirty dishes overnight. Store food items such as cereal, crackers, cookies, flour, sugar, and bread in airtight sealed containers. Empty garbage every night into a sturdy container with a tightly lid.
Baiting is an effective method to control or eliminate cockroaches. Insecticidal dusts like boric acid, silica aerogel, and diatomaceous can provide additional control. The use of residual insecticidal sprays or aerosol foggers within a structure is of little value in controlling cockroaches. In fact, these applications may disperse the cockroaches making complete elimination difficult and lengthy. Structural Pest is professionally trained and will utilize all the current techniques and procedures to eliminate this pest and give you peace of mind.
