Little Black Ant
Biology
The little black ant is found throughout the United States, especially in the eastern half of the U.S. The little black ants are small and contain many queens. Colonies will often move to other locations. Indoors, little black ants nest in woodwork, decaying wood and concrete. Outside nests are found in the soil under rocks, logs or debris. Nests may also be found in yard mulch and in open areas of lawns where nests look like small holes of very fine soil. A common location for outdoor nests are building foundations. These ants travel often and are usually seen on foundation walls and sidewalks.
Feeding Preferences
Little black ants normally feed on sugar sources. Indoors, little black ants may feed on grease and food debris. Outdoors, they eat other insects and plants.
Transmitted Diseases
The little blank ant is not known to spread human diseases.
Habits
Little black ant swarms are common from June to August, that is when they are frequently seen along sidewalks.
Little black ants are common in wooded areas. In yards, they make their nest under rocks, in rotting logs, and under piles of bricks or lumber. Indoors, nests are located in woodwork, wall voids, decaying wood, and, concrete.
