Pavement Ant
Biology
The pavement ant are found throughout the United States. They are also known as the “sugar ant”. These ants are one of the most commonly seen in North America. The average pavement ant colony ranges from 3,000-4,000 ants with several queens however, there are larger colonies containing over 10,000 ants.
Feeding Preferences
Pavement ants are opportunistic feeders that will “swarm” on foods and are are easily controlled with bait. Indoors, pavement ants feed on food debris, pet food, and grease. Outdoors, this ant feeds on insects, honey dew, seeds and plant sap.
Transmitted Diseases
The pavement ant is not known to be a carrier of diseases.
Habits
Inside pavement ants will occasionally nest in walls, in insulation, and under floors. The most likely place is in ground-level cement walls of the foundation and especially near some heat sources in the winter.
Outside these ants typically nest under stones, cracks in pavement, and next to buildings. The pavement ant normally enters buildings through cracks in the slab and walls.
